To mark Fairtrade Fortnight (February 27 - March 11 2012), Divine Chocolate - 45% owned by Ghanaian cocoa farmers - invites you to open the New English Hymnal and count all the hymns containing the word 'divine' (and not only in the first line!). Whoever names the most hymns correctly (we'll accept hymn numbers or first lines) will win a selection of Divine chocolate. The competition is open to everyone registered as having sponsored a hymn (you can do so on our JustGiving page). Simply fill in the entry form in church and pop it in the Divine box, or email your answer to torindouglas@aol.com, putting 'Divine competition' in the Subject box. The competition closes at midnight on Saturday February 25th 2012. In the event of a tie, the winner will be drawn by the vicar, Father Kevin Morris.
Chiswick-based management consultancy BCL Consulting is totting up all the money and working out which are the Top Ten most-sponsored hymns. And if you want to learn more about the hymns and their writers and composers, Waterstones is selling the John Betjeman Hymnbook, based on his entertaining and illuminating BBC Radio 4 broadcasts about hymns. Chiswickw4.com and ForMums.net are keeping everyone informed.
Exotic fruit, specially selected to maintain energy and keep the singers' throats lubricated, is being generously donated by Andreas Georghiou, our local greengrocer on Turnham Green Terrace, Chiswick's renowned local shopping street. Andreas's business ethos is never to compromise on taste and flavour - and his shop is just down the road from the church. If you enjoyed the fruit, and you survive the Hymnathon, do drop in to let Andreas know. Andreas is sponsoring the Saturday morning Breakfast, along with Macken Brothers, who are supplying the bacon and sausages. And to keep the singers healthy, Hogarth Health Club is donating free day passes for singers
On Saturday afternoon, at about 3pm, we hope the pews will be full for the National hymns - 488 'And did those feet in ancient time' and 489 'God save our gracious Queen'. After which, tea will be served in St Michael & All Angels Parish Hall, followed at about 7pm by the grand finale - when we'll sing the hymn that has raised the most money from sponsors. The whole afternoon is kindly sponsored by Savills of Chiswick High Road, the major sponsor of events at St Michael's each year, including the Bedford Park Festival and the Chiswick Book Festival. The cups of tea are generously donated by Kyra von Schottenstein of the Classic Image Cafe, 15 Devonshire Road W4 2EU (020 8995 9977) - famous for its fresh home-made cakes, quiches, salads, sandwiches and soups. (Not to mention her large selection of cards, wrapping paper and ... classic image prints). And Whisk Cooking Solutions is providing Nespresso coffee for much of the rest of the time.
